Server midget got a jetpack!

Random Crap March 23rd, 2006

Just a little update about the server midget.

I’ve disabled the mp3 playback plugin I was using to stream mp3’s. The del.icio.us playtagger script I was using slowed the site down significantly, page load times should be much faster now.

Certified!

Random Crap March 22nd, 2006

I went in today to take my A+ certification, Brandon picked me up from my house and we went there. We went into the testing center, showed our id’s and signed in and everything. We went in to take the test. It’s composed of two portions, the Hardware and Software. We took the Hardware portion first.
The test makes me laugh, my favorite question out of the entire test would have to be, “When working on a computer, what should be done prior to opening the computer?”
And one of the choices was “Move beverages to a shelf above the computer”
I successfully passed that portion. I left the testing room and went to the office (you enter the office and then go to the testing room), The guy gave me my score sheet, and the receipt I had requested. When he gave it to me he said he wasn’t sure why I wanted it, since I didn’t have to pay for it. This confused the crap out of me, considering I pay 316 bucks to take the test. The receipt showed that I didn’t pay anything.
So I went to the cashiers office and asked him about it. He had no idea what I was talking about, and after a long conversation, we figured that we would leave a note for the woman I talked to on monday about it, and see what she said.

I then went and took the software portion. And man did I get the worst test. It asked me questions on the material I hadn’t studied, like networking and the boot process. But I still passed that portion!
So I passed the A+ Certification test! Brandon passed it too, we were both really happy to have passed it. He got a higher score then me on both parts though :/ but hey! We still passed! and as a plus we get an A on our final and mid-term in Tech 215!
So to celebrate we went to Taco time and bought 12 taco’s. It’s a lot of food but we ate most of it, we had 2 extra, so he took them.
And now I get to study for my math test :(

Maybe I’m addicted

College, Geekin' out, Random Crap March 20th, 2006

Well, it’s finals week. Today me and Brandon went up to the North Campus testing center and registered for the A+ certification test. It was sort of on a whim, so I’m going to be studying for that test. We’re going to take both tests on wednsday, back to back. Which I’ve been told is a very bad idea. But why not?

I also turned in my final for Animation. Unfortunately for me when I came home I remembered I still had to turn it in so I quickly grabbed my bag, took out my math book, since it was extra weight, and caught the bus down there. Once there I ran to the Art store to see if I could grab  a folder to hold the sketches, since they were too large for  normal binder. He told me to check the bookstore, I went there and couldn’t find one that would fit it. I ended up buying a binder with the little clip inside it that holds the papers, and cut each sketching down a little so it would fit height-wise.
When I was sticking the binder inside the giant envelope it didn’t fit, so I had to go back to the bookstore and buy a larger one. After that I reached into my backpack to grab my sketch book. Which wasn’t in there. I later discovered that when I had pulled out the math book, my sketchbook popped out with it. It was about 3 o’clock now, and I wasn’t going to be able to go home and get it, so I ended up just turning in only half my sketches, which really sucks ass, butI’ll have to deal with it I guess. Other then this one I have two other finals. My Tech final and my math final. Both of which are on thursday, starting tomorrow I’m going to be studying big time, I’m going to do my best to avoid the computer.

Speaking of which, I finally figured out who the toshiba laptop wouldn’t work. The stick of 512 my dad bought is actually bad. Sucks for him because when I was putting everything together I was going to save the box for the laptop and for the ram, but my dad told me to just toss it :S
I was looking at the RMA instructions for the RAM manufacturer, turns out that you have to return it with original packaging. So we won’t even be able to send it back.
Rudy my Tech teacher said it may just be because the ram module inside the laptop right now (OEM one) is a proprietary module, so it’s architecture is just different from the module I was trying to put in (the 512). After switching it out I was able to successfully install Fedora Core 4. Unfortunately it didn’t detect my LAN card correctly and I couldn’t connect to my router through DHCP, and every time I tried to set it to static ip, it killed my router.
I ended up installing Red Hat 9, with is EOL (End of Life), so no updates as of last year :/. Oh well, at least it’s working! Although if my dad lets me keep it, which would be totally awesome, i might put Debian on their instead ;) I prefer Fluxbox over KDE and GNOME.

Anyways, enough of my geek talk. There’s been one thing that’s bothering me, there’s a girl I’ve been talking to via internet, I have never met her in real life, we’ve been talking everyday through IRC, and I gotta say that she is a pretty awesome person. She works as a secretary in a law firm and types up dictations all day. Very boring job I gotta say. I normally talk to her in her last hours of work and when she’s at home. Last week she mailed me a letter using the firms stationary, it was an awesome letter! I got it today and it was pretty funny, I won’t divulge the contents of the letter for the sake of privacy though! Anyways, as I was saying. She’s got this great personality and I enjoy talking to her a lot. And for those of you who are curious I have seen a picture of her an she is a very attractive woman. The only thing that’s a little disturbing is that I think I’m beginning to feel attachment for a girl I met on IRC. How creepy is that?

Linux Woes

Random Crap March 18th, 2006

Things that don’t work with Linux:
Mandriva is not laptop friendly, no cd-rom support.
Imaging linux from a 6gb drive in a tower to a 60gb drive in a laptop does not work. Grub hates it.
Writing notes using thumbdrive linux. Can’t save files.

And many other things. Oh, and the Toshiba Satellite M80 sucks.

Update: Actually, the laptop doesn’t suck. That RAM my dad bought last week turned out to be bad, I’m installing Gentoo right now to it.

I got accepted!

College, Geekin' out March 18th, 2006

My dad called me up today, he told me that I got a letter from Emily Carr, and I got accepted!
I’m really surprised that i got accepted, considering that I sorta submitted everything at the last second, and I barely revised my essay before I turned it in. I guess it was a good idea to put my portfolio online, otherwise the whole thing would have looked like utter crap in print. Thus is the curse of digital art :(
In other news I went to WTA today, Jamie picked me up at 8, of course she showed up early so I was half-asleep and barely awake. So she ended up loitering in my living room while I got ready, we went up to BCC and met everyone up there then drove off to WTA (Wilderness Technology Alliance), We ended up doing what we did last time, We imaged computers and flashed their bios, then ran windows update on them.
For the first hour or so I was hunting through their warehourse of computer parts for a working hub, since we’re all insane and do 4 to 6 computers at the same time, I finally found one and got it going, I was doing 4 at a time, Alex was doing 3 at a time, and Brandon was doing 6 at a time. It was hella cool. Oh and the guy who works their gave me a gigabit Network card! Now I just need to get another one and a gigabit hub, and I’ll be flying :p

Tomorrow is the last open lab day, and the techs are going to be swamped, all the students from tech 215 will be there struggling to get all their assessments done and do their kits, me included. Thanks to my stupidity of slacking off half the quarter, I have to get 6 assessments signed off and done tomorrow, plus the kit. Hopefully we’ll be able to talk the techs into opening the lab on sunday :(

Performancing Firefox

Geekin' out, Random Crap, Useful bits of info March 15th, 2006

I’ve downloaded a cool firefox extension called Performancing for Firefox. It’s pretty cool, like a little blog editor for firefox, but it works kinda spiffy-like.

You should check it out.

Grabbed this off, digg. It’s kinda like a mini-help for the kernel, but way more then that!

Must have…entertainment……

Random Crap March 12th, 2006

While not having to pay for cable tv is awesome. I do kinda miss watching scrubs and stargate.
So I’ve started looking into legal ways to watch my favorite shows. I’m considering getting netflicks, and watching all the seasons that way. I might go with the 1 dvd at a time deal for 9.99, which isn’t that bad.

I don’t want to go with iTunes, because they’re evil, and I’m never going to install iTunes to my computer because that program keeps trying to take over my computer with it.

Anyone have suggestions? I don’t want to go to blockbuster, I want some sort of service that mails them to me, or I can download them.
